Improving Performance: Core Practices in MathMathematics is a core subject. Unfortunately, not all students perform well in mathematics. Only 3 fifths of 12th graders can understand moderately complex math (Dolejs, 2006). To improve the performance of students in mathematics in all levels, it is important to get the best ways to teach Math. It is also important to get the interest of the students to learn mathematics. This can be done by improving on traditional methods of teaching. In 2009, the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) conducted a study in five states in the United States to have a perspective of how to improve Mathematics performance taking the case of high performing schools. In this paper, we are going to review of this research and get a purview of how mathematics performance can be improved in schools and give teachers the best ways to keep students interested in learning math. The NCEA took a sample of 70 top performing schools in five states to observe why these schools performed better in math and sciences to draw a case that can be used in other schools to improve their performance. NCEA studied institutions with populations ranging from 200 to 4000 students. The composition of the schools was a mixture of all races. All schools that were studied had a mixture of both genders, male and female. The schools were urban, suburban, and rural schools that have shown a remarkable high performance than other schools. NCEA identified the schools using data they got from each state education of department about the student achievements. In developing their report NCEA used schools that had performed better than other schools with similar demographics in the past 3 years. From the report that NCEA developed it examined that the schools performed better in IMPROVING PERFORMANCE: CORE PRACTICES IN MATH terms of strategies for instructions. Mathematical instructional strategies were used in these high performing schools. These strategies include: a high level of student participation in the learning process, a demand for a higher-order thinking, following instruction models based on inquiry- with inclusion of a combination of cooperative learning, direct issuance of instructions, use of labs or hands-on investigations, and manipulative. The research also connects the students and their prior knowledge so that they can make meaningful applications in the real- world as well as integration of literacy activities into the courses Researchers at NCEA realized that instructors should create conducive environments where students are not afraid to make mistakes as they try to answer questions and in making of presentations. Both methods are important in teaching of math. The teachers should strive to assist students in methods that serve them right. Procedural learning in math is vital in grasping math algorithms and facts. The article gives better ways of teaching students math. In Education it is important to attain the goal of teaching by doing it in a systematic way that is productive. To increase the performance of students in math, NCEA’s research suggests some of the forms by which the best schools in the five states under study they have particular ways of teaching. We learn methods of teaching and this article brings fore the importance of these methods and using them differently so that the goal of reaching the students in a most productive way can be done. In mathematics there are 3 components that are critical to an effective mathematics instruction. This includes the following: Teaching for understanding of concepts, development of procedural literacy and a promotion of a strategic competence by problem-solving investigation (Shellard & Moyer, 2002). Teachers should adopt methods that challenge the student to use their intellect to solve problems IMPROVING PERFORMANCE: CORE PRACTICES IN MATH and not just procedural learning of the concepts that are involved.Interest is an important aspect in teaching methods. You cannot get the best of a person who is not interested in what he or she is doing. In class, it is not a different case. Students must be interested in what they are learning so that they can be productive in their learning and perform well. Mathematics has always a negative attitude of many students. According to NCEA (2009), students in higher performing schools were interested in learning. For the interest of the students to be gotten, the students need to feel that they are connected with what they are learning. These can be done by connecting what is taught to real life situations. The teacher should use the student’s fascinations and also interests. The teacher can also work with giving the students options of which they can make choices and presentation of information in multiple formats. It is important that the students feel connected to the subject they are learning and know that they can use it in the real-world to solve problems. The NCEA article of 2009 (NCEA, 2009) a case of mathematics and science gives several previews of how the problem of poor performance in schools can be dealt with. This is by drawing the cases of schools that were already performing better in math and science than other schools. Math is a core subject that should be understood by students as it is directly used in the work place as well as in higher learning. With a concern of underperformance of students in math, some steps must be taken to reverse the trends. Education is an important sector that keeps improving from taking the lessons achieved by the implementations that have been done before. There are institutions that are taking appropriate steps to improve the productivity of education like these performing schools that were under study by NCEA (NCEA, 2009). Education cannot only be achieved by using traditional methods but by learning new methods of achieving the desired goal IMPROVING PERFORMANCE: CORE PRACTICES IN MATH of passing on information. As an educator, the article Core practices in math and science: An investigation of consistently higher performing Schools in Five States (NCEA, 2009) gives the best practice of achieving desired results. In mathematics this is having a teaching structure that enhances learners to understand mathematics better. As a future educator, NCEA’s article challenges for methods used in teaching math. The Education Alliance (2006) have suggested through research studies that some of the best practices are: focusing on specific concepts and skills that are based on standards, differentiating of instructions, ensure that the instructional activities are centered on the learner, use the students experience as a basis of building new knowledge, making of real-life connections, asking questions that require the students to justify their answers, and emphasis of computational skills. Through this, the interest of math to students can generally increase as well as their performance.
