Communication is essential to life because
the individual as well as an organisation cannot survive without communication,
verbal or non-verbal. This is also because “communication is the process by
which we understand others and in turn endeavor to be understand by them. It is
dynamic, constantly changing and shifting in response to the total situation”
(Aderson, 1959). Especially, in the 21st century,
communication skill is one of the most important soft skills because it is the
way we behave, communicate effectively. Without communication skill, we never
get success as Robbins (1986, p.198) said “the quality of your life is the
quality of your communication”. An international organisation of research
scientists examining human intelligence has revealed that for achieving in
life, soft skills (emotional intelligence) including communication skill
account for 85% while hard skills (logical intelligence) make up only 15%.
Without doubt, communication skill has a vital contribution in our success and
it is necessary for us to enhance this skill. Thus, this paper, based on
secondary data, will discuss the importance of communication skill on in life
and ways to boost this skill.

2.1. IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS

are always filled with the aspiration to get along with others around them and
being try to fulfill this goal. Communication skills are the key to help people
perform that because communication skills play a crucial role in developing
relationships (Sam, 2017) and ” Human relations are impossible without
communication and communication is impossible without human relations”
(D.Berth,2000). Obviously, communication and relations have close connection
and a positive relationship will be set with good communication skills.
Communication skills make friends and connect people to each other. No matter
whether people are studying or working, communication can help to build a
relationship with others. Having communication skills means people can identify
with the opposite person. In addition, Dilen Schneider (1996) describes
understanding as the foundation for the quality of a relationship. Thank to the
capability of the parties including empathy and connection with each other,
relationships among members in families, couples, collegues, or among friends
boast of success (Sam, 2017). Therefore, “effective communications become
productive members of society and make relationships successful through sharing
thoughts, feelings, and needs, thereby bringing their counterparts closer to
their world” (Sam,2017). Moreover, one important aspect of communication skills
is being able to persuade people to do things. In life, in numerous cases,
people need convince others to follow their views and this is very difficult.
Nevertheless, it is easier with communication skills.

persuading certainly help to receive respect from people around because ” if

People have been communicating for over 60000 years and a

Therefore, people need find ways to improve their
communicating ability. And by mastering the listening skill which is one of the
most essential communication skill, people can communicate more effectively.
There are at least two ways to listen namely active and passive. A distinction
can be made between hearing and listening. Hearing is the first step of
listening (Zeuschner and Raymond, 1997, p.38) just simply hear sounds, while “listening
means “paying attention to the words that are
being spoken with the intention of understanding the other person”
(Hellesvig-Gaskell, 2017).

If people want communication effectively, active listening
is the most important part needing improving. There are five steps included active
listening. This process involved (1) getting prepared to listen, (2) staying involved
with the communication, (3) remembering, (4) evaluating, (5) responding. Firstly
people have to have listening preparation get ready both physically and
mentally. In terms of physical preparation, it’s pivotal to be capable of
hearing the sounds. It is necessary for everyone to move closer to the source
(Zeuschner and Raymond F, 1997, p.42). People should avoid away noises that
makes you easily distract. For example, people can shut down smartphone to get
rid of further distractions (Cosmato, 2014). Besides, people need find out a
topic before the event to have background information. This helps people
enhance knowledge about the topic bringing is an effective communication. The
second step in active listening is to stay involved. It is very difficult to
pay attention to the speaker because distractions consisting of “external” and “internal”
are around us (Miles, 2017). To avoid these distractions, people should keep
eye contact with the speaker as a way to build the connection with the speaker and
to encourage the speaker to show his or her view willingly which plays an
important part in communication (Evensis, 2016). Moreover, people can stay
involve by imagine pictures of everything relating what the speaker is talking
but still listening the speaker (Forbes, 2012). The next step in active
listening is remembering. Nothing is the best way to improve your memory. All
techniques which are useful for remembering information require “motivation” and
“dedication” to the task (Hybels and Weaver II, 2007, p.83). When people are
motivated, they will concentrate better, easily remember information. Just like
that, to memorize a wide range of figure, it is necessary that he or she pay
absolute attention to the conversation and the speaker. Without doubt, if
people focus on conversation, they will obtain numerous information. It is the
time for them to review key words and remember them (Zeuschner and Raymond F,
1997, p.44). Fourth, active listening includes evaluating. After people have
obvious and whole information, they need to evaluate it. Fourth, active
listening includes responding. In other words, it is feedback. It is “the
return to you of behavior you have graduated”

People have to ask questions and especially give their
opinion but still respect the speaker’s view. Sometimes, they say “hmmm” or “ums”
or “ers” (Zeuschner, Raymond F, 1997, p.88). People need control it to have an
effective communication. The last stage of the active listening process is. It
is noticeable that active listening is a process which its steps closely relate
and at is only effective when all these steps are done.

Another way to boost communication shill is body language. They
are very important.

Including gestures and facial expression. People use gestures
everyday in constant way and without thought (Zeuschner and Raymond F, 1997,
p89) this accidentally makes many gestures which are unnecessary for
communication. People need to be notice can understand what they are saying.
For example , when people want show how many of something, they can point their
fingers of people can show agreement , encouragement and attention by nodding
along with what the speaker is saying sometimes , people also should move to
enhance confidence – an important sector in communication . moreover , if ppl
want to get success in communication they have to a suitable posture . Pp
should sit or stand straight and face others when talking. Hybels and weaver 2
( 2007, p138) said ” stand all and straight summous up visions of someone ethical
, courageous awake, alert and alive good posture”. Last but not least , facial
expression is one of the most pivotal factors to have a effective communication
. ” Facial expression covers a considerable amount of nonverbal communication ,

place others look when talking . There fore , to make sympathy before starting
a conversation , it is good to smile . Smile smiling is the bridge connecting
ppl closer.
